A varied group of passengers boarding a ship bound for pre-WWII Germany represents a microcosm of early 1930s society. After being fished out of the sea by a sailer, three fugitives find themselves prisoners of the ship's brutal skipper who refuses to put them ashore and they hatch an escape plan during a crew mutiny. As World War II begins, German freighter Captain Karl Ehrlich tries to get his ship back to Germany through a gauntlet of Allied warships.

As a teenager visiting Vienna, he met the famous composer Johannes Brahms, who played a composition Dohnanyi wrote - and immediately pronounced, "You are going to be a great composer." Though only 5 when his grandfather died, McGlynn has memories of playing in the backyard with his grandfather and listening to him play the piano. McGlynn plays the piano, the French horn and the bagpipes - but can't match his grandfather's musicianship.
Romance on the High Seas
More than a dozen biographies have been written about him, including a recent one in Germany about Ernst, Hans and Hans' two sons, Christoph and Klaus. Christoph is the conductor emeritus of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra; Klaus was the mayor of Hamburg, Germany. Ernst von Dohnanyi spent the last 11 years of his life in Tallahassee and is buried at Roselawn Cemetery.
Audience Reviews
Picking up eight Oscar nominations and directed by Stanley Kramer, Ship of Fools features a stellar ensemble cast including Vivien Leigh (in her final film role), Lee Marvin and George Segal. Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic. Even more recently, 2020’s “Let Them All Talk” starred Meryl Streep on Cunard’s iconic modern ocean liner, Queen Mary 2. The show introduced a whole generation to cruising and thus goes down as one of the most pivotal influences on the then-fledgling industry. Siegel has directed one previous film, “Big Fan” (2009), a deadpan character study that deconstructed American sports mania, and as he demonstrated in that movie he’s got a rare classical feel for pace and structure. When Gio and Jessica find a stash of cocaine in a car they’ve broken into, it’s just the ticket to rev the film up into a true ’80s party movie (without making the ripping off of a drug dealer look any easier than it is).

"We were not even aware of all (the political intrigue) that had gone on in his life. We just knew Dr. Dohnanyi was a great, great person," said Hilda Starbuck, a retired Leon County music teacher who graduated from FSU in 1952. "From time to time, he would give a little talk about his childhood. Whenever he told us the story (about meeting Brahms), I would get goosebumps." He was conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and gave concerts around the world. He mentored famous musicians, including his eventual colleague at FSU, the late Edward Kilenyi.
Gerald Ensley: World War II film reminds Tallahasseeans of a past great
Gio spends his nights hitting on local girls by cruising past them in his car, and that’s how he meets Francesca Russo (Emily Ratajkowski). She tells him she’s from Bay Ridge, and with her Roman nose and sensual lips, her pile of thick, dark curls, and her feminine stugots, she’s just the sort of guidette a guy like Gio was born to be with. She plays hard to get (but not too hard), and before long they’re grinding away in his front seat.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). In Frank's cabin, Lily finds his research on the Tears of the Moon, but Frank insists he stopped searching long ago. They are captured by cannibals that are actually the Puka Michuna tribe who work for Frank as part of his contrived jungle cruise adventure.
A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles. A self-indulgent and vain publishing magnate finds his privileged life upended after a vehicular accident with a resentful lover. IMF agent Ethan Hunt is sent to Sydney to find and destroy a genetically modified disease called "Chimera". A Manhattan doctor embarks on a bizarre, night-long odyssey after his wife's admission of unfulfilled longing. A young man must stop the Lord of Darkness from destroying daylight and marrying the woman he loves.
Out to Sea
The career and life of Stanley Kubrick is explored through pictures, clips from his films, his old home movies, comments from his colleagues and a narration by Tom Cruise. Dagwood disguises himself as a drummer in the ship's conga band to sneak aboard a South American cruise ship. Charlie tries to discover the identity of a strangler who strikes multiple times on a cruise ship bound from Honolulu to California. For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time.
And if you start to try and cheat those physics, which is what happens a lot of the time, then the simulation stuff all goes right out the window, and it breaks everything. Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying. Set in 1965, four rowdy teenage guys travel to Tijuana, Mexico for a night of partying when they are joined by a heartbroken housewife who is in town seeking a quick divorce. A motley crew of treasure hunters plan to rob the cruise-liner RMS Queen Mary, using a recovered WW2 German submarine. A ballet dancer and a showgirl fake a marriage for publicity purposes, then fall in love. An ordinary foundry worker fakes a love story between him and the chambermaid from RMS Titanic.

Seabourn Legend was rented for six weeks to film the movies and its multiple filming locations were used including those in the USA, the Caribbean and France. Shot in glorious Technicolor and featuring a razor-sharp screenplay, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of the best musical comedies set on the seven seas. While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on Queen Mary, which is docked in Long Beach, California). Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise.
On a transatlantic crossing, The Marx Brothers get up to their usual antics and manage to annoy just about everyone on board the ship. Ajay's life turns upside down when he learns that his wife Piya has Alzheimer and he has no option, but to leave his wife in a mental hospital. A retired auto manufacturer and his wife take a long-planned European vacation only to find that they want very different things from life. During World War I, a German spy and a French spy meet and fall in love. Showgirls Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw travel to Paris, pursued by a private detective hired by the suspicious father of Lorelei's fiancé, as well as a rich, enamored old man and many other doting admirers. In the 90 minutes it runs for, Cruise fails to provide the pleasure you'd expect from a feature of its production caliber.
And among the public spaces featured in the film is the ship’s signature FlowRider surf simulator. Just as “The Love Boat” is considered the quintessential cruise TV show, James Cameron’s 1997-blockbuster “Titanic” will probably be forever recognized as the most ubiquitous movie to depict an ocean liner. Or in Spanish, dubbed in English, is “High Seas,” another mystery series — think concealed Nazi gold and curious onboard deaths — set on a fictitious 1940s ocean liner inspired by the SS Normandie and Cunard’s Queen Mary. If you’re seeking “Lost” meets “Titanic,” Netflix’s singular season of the mysterious “1899” might just fit the bill. The fictional steamship Kerberos and its emigrant passengers get drawn into a Bermuda Triangle-esque, multilingual (German and English) period thriller.
